Artificial Intelligence
This block is dedicated to deep learning (DL), but we need to spend some time to define artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). Doing so will help us to distinguish those terms.
Artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning are highly interconnected. In fact the relationship is hierarchical.
Info
Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence, while deep learning is a subset of machine learning.
That means that to fully understand deep learning, we need to understand machine learning and to fully understand machine leanring, we need to understand artificial intelligence. Let's start with the definition of the term Artificial Intelligence.
Info
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a machine or computer system to perform tasks requiring cognitive abilities, such as perception, decision-making, and language translation. AI research aims to create systems that can understand, learn, reason, and adapt to new situations. This definition was produced by a large language model called ChatGPT.
At World4AI we prefer to look at AI as a composition of two subsets of artificial intelligence.
Info
Artificial Intelligence = GOFAI (Good Old Fashioned AI) + Machine Learning
GOFAI usually covers such topics as reasoning, planning and searching. Those techniques were especially popular before the 2010's, but fell out of favour once deep learning became popular. We plan to dedicate a whole block to GOFAI in the near future. Machine learning on the other hand is the topic of the next section.
